Fine lines and wrinkles are common as patients age, especially after the age of 30 when natural collagen and elastin begin to decrease. However, this doesn’t mean that aging skin has to stick around! With cosmetic injectables at the practice of Dr. Jessica Belz, patients have non-surgical options for maintaining their youthful appearance. Both neuromodulators (such as Botox) and dermal fillers (like Juvederm) can be used to enhance the skin. However, many patients ask: what is the difference?
Neuromodulators vs. dermal fillers
A popular neuromodulator is that of Botox. Many patients have heard of Botox but might not be aware of how it works. Botox works when it is injected into the muscles of the face. It inhibits contraction that leads to dynamic wrinkle formation. When these muscles are resting, the skin smoothes and wrinkles such as crow’s feet begin to subside. The results from Botox injections often last approximately six months before maintenance injections should be completed.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injectables that do not work in the muscles. Instead, they are gels that are formulated with hyaluronic acid to attract water molecules. These injectables are administered directly into the wrinkles and folds to provide immediate improvement. Dermal fillers are commonly used all over the face, while Botox typically focuses on the upper third of the face where muscle contractions result in more wrinkle formation.
Which one is right for me?
Determining whether you should have neuromodulators or dermal fillers is a decision a patient needs to make with proper education. Our team can consult with an individual to find out which injectable is right for their specific needs. In some cases, patients may combine both neuromodulators and dermal fillers for a complete “liquid face lift.”
