How Many KYBELLA® Treatments Do You Usually Need?

Profile shot of a woman after KYBLLA in San Antonio Most people need more than one KYBELLA® session, and at Dr. Jessica Belz’s practice, about three treatments are typically enough for many people to feel satisfied with their results. Some need fewer or choose additional visits, depending largely on how much fat is present beneath the chin.

Based in San Antonio, TX, Dr. Jessica Belz provides non-surgical facial services for concerns such as submental fullness. She is a San Antonio native and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Her training includes a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Why KYBELLA Usually Takes a Series of Treatments

KYBELLA contains synthetic deoxycholic acid, which destroys fat cells beneath the chin. Once those cells have been destroyed, they can no longer store fat.

The change doesn’t happen overnight. Your body gradually clears the targeted fat cells, so improvement becomes more visible over the weeks following an injection session. Results build as you complete additional treatments.

This gradual process is why your total number of appointments can’t always be predicted from the first injection alone. Your response to each session helps guide your plan.

Is Three Treatments the Standard?

There isn’t one treatment number that applies to everyone. The FDA permits a maximum of six KYBELLA sessions, while Dr. Belz has found that many people are happy with their outcome after about three.

Someone with less under-chin fat may need fewer sessions. More significant fullness can require additional appointments.

Your facial anatomy also matters. Fullness beneath the chin isn’t always caused primarily by fat. When loose or sagging skin is the bigger concern, a procedure such as a neck lift or facelift might make more sense than additional KYBELLA injections.

How Far Apart Are KYBELLA Sessions?

You won’t receive the full series at once. KYBELLA sessions are spaced apart so the targeted area has time to respond and you can see how your contour is changing.

Although treatments may be spaced four weeks apart, Dr. Belz generally prefers about five to six weeks between visits. This allows more time for the outcome from your previous appointment to become visible before deciding whether another round is worthwhile.

What Happens Between Treatments?

Swelling is common after KYBELLA, particularly after the first session. You might also notice temporary bruising, tenderness, numbness, redness, or firmness beneath the chin.

Visible changes commonly begin within four to six weeks and continue to develop with subsequent visits.
