Close up of woman holding breast implants in hands At the practice of Dr. Jessica Belz, San Antonio, TX area women have options available to them when it comes to enhancing the appearance of their bust. Breast enhancement is a popular procedure performed at her practice. However, some women who have had breast implants placed may opt to have them removed at a later point in time. Below are a few reasons why patients may consider breast implant removal with our plastic surgeon:

  • Dissatisfaction – for some women, the dissatisfaction they feel after having breast implants placed may lead them to consider breast implant removal. Some patients feel as though the size they chose was not large enough or too large, or that they didn’t achieve the goals they wanted with the implants they chose. Others may want to switch from saline to silicone or silicone to saline. This is a personal preference made by some women, and can lead to not only the removal of a breast implant, but replacement.
  • Capsular contracture – a complication that can come from breast augmentation is capsular contracture. This is when the pocket formed to place the implant develops more scar tissue than expected. This can cause hardening and squeezing of the implant, increasing the risk of rupture. Additionally, many patients with this condition will experience pain and swelling that leads them to have their implant removed along with the excessive scar tissue.
  • Infection – in rare cases, women may have an adverse reaction to their breast implants that can lead to infection. This complication may require immediate removal of the breast implant.
  • Breast cancer – women who have breast implants may find that they interfere with standard mammography screenings for breast cancer. This can be concerning, especially for women who have a higher risk of developing breast cancer due to genetic predispositions. Some women may consider removal of an implant as well if they receive a diagnosis of breast cancer and want to undergo surgical procedures to remove the cancer if possible.
