While most people don’t think about their ears much on a day-to-day basis, patients who have disfigurement, birth defects, or trauma to the ear might! Highly noticeable ears, including those that protrude farther from the head than expected, can cause patients to feel incredibly self-conscious about their appearance. Luckily, the ears can be improved in appearance with plastic surgery performed by Dr. Jessica Belz and her team. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, may encompass a variety of specific goals.
What procedures can be performed on the ear?
Our patients have unique needs and situations, so it is essential that our plastic surgeon provide many different treatment options for patient consideration. Below are three of the more common procedures performed on the ear for our patients:
- Ear pinning – ear pinning is an otoplasty procedure that is performed to reposition protruding or prominent ears. This can be done for children or adults who have been self-conscious about their appearance due to the current position of their ears.
- Earlobe repair – patients with earlobes stretched or torn from earrings, gauges, and other piercing may require earlobe repair to correct the problem left behind. This procedure may also be performed for elongated ears to shorten the ears and make the skin less noticeable.
- Disfigurement/birth defects – children and adults who have birth defects or have had trauma that has impacted the appearance of the ears may require earlobe surgery to address disfigurement or the aesthetic look.
What can I expect from ear surgery?
Most procedures on the ear are performed as outpatient surgeries with Dr. Jessica Belz. Patients can expect to take some time off of their normal activities afterwards for proper healing and recovery, and post-operative instructions should be followed closely to facilitate the healing process and reduce the risk of problems and complications such as infection.
