When Can I Exercise After Breast Reduction Surgery?

A woman considering breast reduction wrapping a tape measure around her breasts Recovering from breast reduction surgery often brings a mix of relief and anticipation. It’s normal to have questions arise at this time, such as, “When can I start working out again?”

Whether you’re eager to return to the gym, enjoy long walks, or get back on your yoga mat, understanding your body’s healing timeline is essential.

Dr. Jessica Belz, a San Antonio-based board-certified plastic surgeon, is highly experienced in breast surgery and patient-centered care. Her thoughtful approach ensures each recovery plan matches the individual’s lifestyle, body, and goals.

The First Few Days: Rest Is Essential

Rest should be your priority in the initial 48–72 hours after surgery. You’ll likely notice some swelling, soreness, and fatigue as your body begins to heal. Avoid raising your arms overhead, lifting anything heavy, or making sudden movements.

Light Activity: Weeks 1-2

Short, gentle walks around your home or neighborhood can boost circulation and decrease your blood clot risk. However, you should still avoid:

  • Raising your arms above shoulder level
  • Lifting more than 5–10 pounds
  • Any activity that engages chest muscles

These limitations protect your incisions and minimize swelling.

Gradual Return: Weeks 3-4

By the third week, you may feel ready to do more. However, it’s important to listen to Dr. Belz and follow her guidelines.

Low-impact activities like treadmill walking or light stationary cycling might be allowed if you’re recovering well.

Still off-limits:

  • Running
  • Weightlifting
  • Yoga or Pilates (due to chest and upper-body engagement)

Back to Full Workouts: Week 6 and Beyond

Most patients can resume full workouts, including strength training and high-impact cardio, around 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.

Make sure you get clearance from Dr. Belz before you schedule your first training session. Keep in mind, too, that even at this stage, it’s best to start slow and increase intensity gradually.

Every Body Heals Differently

Remember that healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Dr. Jessica Belz takes pride in offering personalized post-op guidance and supporting each patient. Her medical background, surgical precision, and compassionate care ensure patients in San Antonio and surrounding areas feel confident and informed.
