Breast Reduction in San Antonio, TX – What is a Breast Reduction?

Some women have large breasts that are out of proportion with their bodies. This can often lead to significant neck, back, and shoulder pain, among other painful symptoms. A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, serves to reduce the size of one’s breasts by removing excess breast tissue, skin, and fat. This results in a more proportionate breast size and symptomatic relief.

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Jessica Belz in San Antonio TX, can help you achieve your breast reduction goals and provide relief. Call (210) 497-7100 today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Belz.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Breast Reduction Surgery?

Having overly large breasts can be a burden for a woman, both physically and psychologically. While women tire of the undue attention their breasts can attract, there are also many physical problems caused by overly large breasts. These are the common health issues that often accompany a woman’s decision to have reduction surgery:

  • Spine problems
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Tingling hands
  • Balance problems
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches and migraines

Women with hypermastia often avoid sports and most types of exercise because their breasts are a hindrance to participation. They can also affect both social and professional environments.

What Are The Benefits Of Breast Reduction Surgery?

As noted above, there are many physical benefits, from a decrease in neck pain and back problems to something as simple as not having bra straps dig into your shoulder skin.

Beyond the physical benefits, many women with overly large breasts can be very self-conscious about the breasts and their overall body image. They may tend to wear clothes that hide their body. They may avoid activities that may require less clothing. Exercise and activities where their breasts get in the way are ruled out.

After Dr. Belz decreases patients’ breast size, they often gain an entirely new degree of self-confidence and look at their figure in a much healthier way.

They feel more open to engaging in new exercise classes or regimens, without fear of attracting unwanted attention. They feel comfortable wearing clothing that now complements their figure, rather than seeking to cover it.

How is a reduction mammoplasty done?

There are many different techniques employed for a breast reduction procedure. Having trained under world-renowned breast surgeon, Dr. Dennis Hammond, Dr. Belz specializes in using a short-scar technique called the SPAIR technique. In addition to reducing the size of the breast, this technique allows for re-positioning of the nipple, a decreased scar burden, and an excellent aesthetic contour. During your individualized consultation, Dr. Belz will review the surgical procedure thoroughly. She will also discuss the risks, benefits, and anticipated recovery course. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and most patients are able to go home the same day.

What are the risks involved with breast reduction surgery?

This is major surgery with Dr. Belz, so all of the risks involved with surgery apply to reduction: infection, bleeding, poor healing, and the like. Nipple and breast sensation can be adversely affected, as well as the ability to breastfeed. Dr. Belz is usually able to avoid these issues, but they are possible.

How much pain will I have after breast reduction surgery?

Because Dr. Belz uses the SPAIR technique whenever possible, that eliminates the extra incision along the breast crease, making for an easier recovery. Still, there will be considerable soreness for the first two or three days after your surgery. Dr. Belz will prescribe pain medication for this, and the pain is then generally well-tolerated.

How Long Is Recovery After Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast Reduction San Antonio, TX

Initial recovery from breast reduction surgery is approximately 3 to 5 days, however, some patients may opt to take a week off of work. Bruising and swelling may be present for about 10 to 14 days. One should avoid heaving lifting and strenuous activity for 4 to 6 weeks or until cleared by Dr. Belz.

Should I worry about scarring after breast reduction surgery?

If possible, Dr. Belz uses the SPAIR technique for this surgery. That eliminates the incision along the breast crease. However, there is still an incision circling the areola and dropping down the breast vertically from there. These incisions are necessary to remove the excess skin and breast tissue necessary to reduce the breasts. These scars will lighten with time, but they will remain. Patients feel the scars are a worthwhile tradeoff.

Are my breast reduction results permanent?

The changes Dr. Belz makes to your breasts are permanent. The sagging skin, flattened shape, excessive weight, possibly downward pointing nipples, and the other issues you had with your overly large breasts are all gone for good. Your breast size can fluctuate mildly with weight gain, but unless that weight gain is excessive those changes are minor.

"So happy and satisfied with Dr. Belz & her staff. They are simply the best. I fell in love with them all at my first visit. Dr. Belz did a breast reduction & uplift for me about a month ago. She explained absolutely everything & what to expect. She personally called me at home the day after the surgery just to check on me. How many doctors will do that? My results? Fabulous! I'm 62 years old & was mainly looking to help my back issues. But I'm ecstatic with my new look. Dr. Belz is truly an artist!" - Kathy M.
